I cannot believe I have been bringing you “Mine Finds” on HSN for 14 years! I have to thank each and every one of you for making my job so much fun!
This month is extra special for lots and lots of reason. We will be presenting the infamous Jay King Sculptured Bowl this month. I am so excited for you to receive your bowl. Please make sure to tune in and watch the show, so that you can see the footage of the artisans making the bowls – these are a “true” labor of love.
We have several new “Mine Finds” that we are presenting in our October Show. I have had a lot of requests for extra information on where the stones come from and I am going to share that information with you here – so you will have it for your reference.
Mined in the USA:
- Idaho Marble – This material is Black and white marble, which is a high quality dense form of limestone. Limestone under extreme pressure and metamorphic changes creates marble. This material comes from a location above the Salmon River in Idaho.
Strawberry Onyx – This was brought to us from one of our favorite “rock hounds” who searches the southwest for unique and different minerals. He has been trekking for over 40 years and knew that he had found something special – when he stumbled upon this onyx. This stone is from one large boulder weighing over 500 pounds.

Gecko– This material was found in the area of Lake Havasu, Arizona – the miner pulled over on the side of the road for a quick “pit stop” and discovered the stone sticking up out of the ground. He quickly ran back to his truck for a shovel and a pick and the rest is history.
White Snake Skin Jasper– This stone was discovered in an area in North Western Arizona that is known for its wild burro’s. The burro’s where very curious and helpful when the miner was mining this material. This material is named for its beautiful white and tan appearance.
Mined in South Africa:
- Saturn – is mined in the Southern tip of Africa. South Africa is rich in mineral resources. Saturn is a kind of natural jasper. Jasper is opaque, fine grained or dense variety of silica mineral chert. It has a dull luster, but takes a fine polish. I have always felt like jaspers are “mother nature’s” paint brush, because we get so many color and pattern variations. Jasper is a wonderful stone to work with and I always welcome a new color palette or pattern when a miner brings it to us to design with.
Mined in Brazil:
- Blooming Agate: This material is mined in the east and south western part of Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais. Miners discovered the Blooming Agate when they are mining iron ore.
Mined in China:
- Rainbow Stone: This material is mined in Liaoning which is located in North Eastern China. Liaoning is known for its many fossils. Rainbow was found when explorers where looking for fossils. There is no large scale mining of this material – only 3-5 people at a time mine this material and they carry out by hand what they mine daily.Mongolian Copper Mountain: This material is mined in Inner Mongolia. This mine is located near a copper mine in a mountainous region, thereby giving this stone its name.
I have just returned from what is becoming an annual trip to Europe. I will share many new design inspirations I had while on my trip over the upcoming months. One of my favorite things about visiting Europe is the amount of history – I can never get enough of it.

You’re correct on Alunite. We do enhance the color in this case. I’ve seen it in purple once before though. I buy carnelian all the time. When I can get the natural color I want then I get it. Unfortunately this is not always the case. So you just have to watch. Thanks for your support. J

Turquoise Bowls
We want to thank all of you for tuning in and watching our 14th anniversary show. This was our first release of a new line of decorative designs in stone. We are working on many new and unique designs at this time and you will see them in the future. I want to assure all of you that we will have the first Jay King Sculptured bowl available again on HSN. I want to stress to everyone that this was our first attempt at a decorative item and when we started working on the original release we did not realize what the response would be. I want to assure you that this bowl will be made available in the future – but at this time the Artists are busy working on the order for the November release. We have increased the order, so that there will be plenty of bowls to go around. I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that these are handcrafted one at a time in the USA and each bowl takes 1 – 2 days to make. I want to wish a sincere apology to each of you that missed out on the first release, but again rest assured that the bowls will be made available again just as soon as we can get them. Denise, IL Okay I hear you. If I had a dollar for every time someone made this request I would be rich. It’s not that I don’t want to I have done this in the past. Problem is finding a clip-on finding that will solve the test of time. I thought I had this licked when I came up with a magnetic finding. I even tested it out, one ear only. They were great except when you answered the phone they fell off. Problem is after using them several times they loosen up and fall off. Usually the customer only looses one side. Talk about a problem, so I am working on it. Hopefully I can find something. J
