When I think of summer I think of bronzed skin, soft hair and boho waves. Here in New York, along with most of the northeast, the arctic weather is only just starting to subside.  Whether you’re prepping for summer, or looking to take a tropical springtime vacation (Norwegian Cruise, anyone?), now is a great time to start thinking about how you’re going to style your locks to suit the warm weather. To start off, I should throw out some basic hair care tips that will be the foundation to any hair style. Hair and heat never go well together so when using styling tools be sure your hair is kept in good condition with a heat protectant spray. If you spend a lot of your time outside in the heat,  the humidity will cause your hair to be a frizzy disaster (mine for sure doubles in size!) Therefore, I like to have a good serum or oil on hand to smooth down frizz and keep flyaways at bay. These styling and finishing products will be your best friends this summer! Alright, now that we have the basic essentials figured out it’s ready to style!

1. Next Day Waves: Get the beachy look without stepping foot onto the sand.

My favorite go-to look – soft waves with added volume. For this look, use your straightener or a large barrel curling iron to create loose waves from around the top of your ear down. Complete the look with a volumizing spray at the roots to give it a slept in look – Blowpro’s Textstyle Dry Texture Spray is a great option. Using a dry shampoo will also work a treat. Then you will want to finish with a little serum on the ends to smooth away any flyaways.

2. Messy Up Do’s: A classic look for even the hottest of days.

Messy Up Do

When the real hot weather hits there is no better place for your hair than off your face and neck. A messy top knot is a chic way to put your hair up. You can either put your hair in a high ponytail and twist your hair around to create a bun, or pin random sections until all hair is secure. Once the top knot is secure, pull out random strands of hair to make the overall look a little wind swept and not ‘too done’.

3. Braids: The choices are endless!

In my opinion, a braid is the ultimate nod to summer when talking about hairstyles. Not to mention the plethora of options and looks! For a relaxed look, create one single braid brought around to the side. Pull the front parts of your hair out a little and loosen the braid so it’s not too uniform. Another style of braid is the partly braided. For this, brush through your hair and then take a small section at the front of your hair and braid through to the end. You could either leave it loose or pin the braid to the side of your head. If you are extremely skilled you could try a halo braid; braiding your hair in a circle around the top of your head – I have yet to master this, but still trying!

What are your go-to hairstyles for the summer?

Love,
