For as long as I can remember, August has always been the start of something new and fresh. Before, it meant heading back-to-school with the hottest new outfit. Now, the meaning of August has become the start of a new fashion season for me and the excitement of starting the search for my “new look”.
This fall, my new look involves not only a change of clothing, but a change of name: Lauren Wilner.
After getting married in March of this year, I finally took the plunge and dropped my maiden name for a new, fresh one. It was kind of like getting rid of my super tight skinny jeans from last season, and replacing them with this season’s menswear-inspired trousers…almost!
My favorite thing about Fall Fashion 2010 is that there’s so much newness. So much that I didn’t even know where to begin to start. Which made me think, if I didn’t know where to start then, You, my favorite fashionistas, might need a little help, as well.
So it’s time to get shopping for the new, and toss the old, or, at least, rotate to the back of the closet. Bell bottom jeans will be back in style again someday, right? But, before cleaning out your closet, you must first identify what you will be filling it with. That way, you’ll know exactly what you can get rid of and what to keep.
Instead of buying a whole new wardrobe here are a few key items from this season’s hottest trends that will honestly take you from last fall to this fall:
TRY FAUX FUR
Retro Glam is the most-talked-about trend from the runways this season. If I said it once, I’ll say it again: I don’t care if it is a bag or scarf or hat, like a bag from Adrienne Landau,or a great vest or jacket from Curations with Stefani Greenfield, or even fun leg warmers, do yourself a favor, and purchase just one piece of faux fur and move on! Faux fur pieces work so easily into your existing closet. Shop more: Retro Glam
WEAR OLIVE ACCESSORIES
Get inspired by our Lieutenant Chic trend. The easiest update you can make to your closet is to add color. If you want to make a subtle change then make your next purchase in olive green. I especially love olive accessories, like these pumps from Libby Edelman or a bag from Sharif. I also love Twiggy’s riding jacket in olive—the perfect thing to wear with a simple pair of black pants. ROCK OVER-THE-KNEE BOOTS
Straight from the depths of our Black Magic trend, a sexy pair of over-the-knee boots, like these suede ones from Apepazza, look amazing with anything from jeans to dresses. Just one pair and you are set for the entire fall season. Shop more: Black Magic
GET A CAMEL FIX
Camel goes so well with browns, blues, and tans and it looks super chic and sophisticated with black and grey. I love this dress from Serena Williams. This dress is flattering, and easily can be for day or night.
UPDATE WITH HOSIERY
Another simple and affordable way to update your existing dresses and skirts is with hosiery and leg wear. For less than $20.00, you can literally transform last season’s dress withthese AJ. Valenci tights. The best part is that textured and patterned leg wear is flattering on everyone!
GIVE IN TO OXFORD FLATS
When we started to see this Belle Brummel trend creep up in shoes I was totally against it. Taking inspiration from men’s shoes? What do men know about women’s footwear?! Think again. This is the perfect alternative to the beloved ballet flat. I love the idea of adding an even more feminine touch with either sequins or animal prints, like these fromSam Edelman. GO RETRO GLAM WITH LEOPARD PRINT
Yes, you’ve seen this in previous seasons, but never before have you seen leopard as prevalent as it is right now. My must-have leopard pick is a handbag, of course, likeone from American Glamour Badgley Mischka or this one from Sharif. When you have no idea what to wear, nothing is easier than throwing on a black top, a black bottom and a great leopard bag. You will be the chicest one at the party. Trust me! Now that you know everything you need to know about fall fashion, there’s only one thing left to say: Happy shopping, ladies!
