Call them laugh lines, crow’s feet, or a furrowed brow, but wrinkles by any other name still aren’t so sweet. Luckily, or unluckily depending on how you look at it, wrinkles don’t discriminate from one lady to the next and everyone is bound to get a few as they age. The good news? We know some tricks to prevent wrinkles and hide fine lines so we can keep looking as young as we feel. Try working these simple skincare secrets into your day and see how your skin thanks you.
1. Sleep It Off
We really do need our beauty rest. When we don’t get enough sleep our bodies can have a stress response and produce an excess of the steroid hormone cortisol. An excess of cortisol can break down our skin’s cells and lead to premature aging. For an added boost before you go to bed, apply a nourishing neck and eye cream like this Anti-Aging Duo from Christie Brinkley. Treatments will absorb better at night while we rest and the body repairs itself.
2. Wear Sunscreen!
This is the #1 piece of advice to prevent wrinkles. I love a golden tan but protecting our skin from sun damage is a priority. Whether we sunbathe or are out running errands we need to apply a sunscreen. SPF 15 is a minimum for protection but shoot for SPF 35 with a moisturizer like this Broad Spectrum Day Cream.
3. Stay Hydrated
We’re not counting coffee, tea, or soda, just pure H2O. Chances are most of us are a little on the dehydrated side which causes some of the really fine lines we see around our eyes. Start off your morning with a glass or water, and do the same an hour before bed to prevent these subtle eye creases. If you’re on-the-go without your water bottle and need to give those creases a quick erase you can carry the Inhib-A-Line Wrinkle Blocker Serum in your bag. It’s about the size of a pen and is handy for discreet touch ups.
4. Eat More Fish
Fish is naturally high in omega-3 fatty acids that support healthy cell membranes to protect our skin from free radicals that cause premature aging. Healthier skin cells also retain moisture better meaning skin has superior abilities to fill fine lines. If you’re not much of a seafood fan, you can get this serving in a supplement like Andrew Lessman’s Essential Omega-3.
5. Use Sheer Coverage
Resist the urge to heavily apply concealer to creases around the eyes or mouth. Heavy application can crease and crack throughout the day highlighting wrinkles further. Instead opt for a sheer, tinted primer or light foundation like Lancôme’s Miracle Cushion Liquid Compact Foundation that can fill fine lines instead of sitting on top like a blanket.
