Something I love about the approach of a holiday is planning the family dinner… or brunch! Spending time with those you love around the table just becomes that much more special when there’s something to celebrate, and in our house sharing those moments over a good meal is always something to celebrate.
Many times it’s easy to get lost in the stress or planning of a family gathering, but today we’re going to lessen your load by sharing how to make a festive and rustic tablescape with items you mostly have on hand… with just an added touch of whimsy! When you’ve got friends and family headed your way, clear the table of any distractions so you can start with a blank slate. We’re going to build up from here.
I usually start with the place settings, and for this it’s totally okay to mix and match! Mix metals (gold chargers and silver flatware is A-okay), mix colors (gray plates and white egg-shaped bowls add a more complex palette and a fun twist), then just add in some texture with linens. We topped off our place settings with the most whimsical of party favors, and whether it’s family or a big group of friends, everyone appreciates a gift made just for them! We created a sweet gift, filled with treats to make our guests feel special, and by DIY-ing it, we were able to keep it in the color palette of the table.
Next, add in the glasses you’ll be using based on the drinks you’ll be serving, and don’t be afraid to pull out the special barware. Whether you’re the type that saves your gold rimmed glasses for a special occasion or uses them to make your daily moments special, now is the time to set them out… using the bit of metallic to add that touch of glam.
When I’m short on time or cash, instead of running out to the market for flowers, using potted plants and succulents from around the house are the perfect way to spruce up a spring celebration on the cheap. It fills in the table with greens and everyone will think you spent plenty of time planning it that way.
I’m ALWAYS a fan of using the food you’re serving as part of the decor! Use different trays to spread out appetizers and sides around the table, creating layers and levels of food. By making the table feel full and luxurious, you’re helping guests feel welcome since they aren’t having to wait for food… they can start on the first course, whether it’s cheese, bread and fruit or a bowl of soup, while the conversation and drinks flow.
And finally, make sure you set it and forget it. Do what you can ahead of time. Have fun adding elements from around your home and kitchen to make your table feel full and whimsical… and then sit and enjoy this special time with family and friends!
