There’s nothing like a craft you can make… and eat too! Get feeling festively fall with some fun baking!
As the weather cools, it seems our drive to create and make something reminiscent of the season around us is at an all time high. Sugar cookies are the perfect, simple base for whipping up some fun crafting in the kitchen.
While they may not be the most crafty of cookie (as they do rise a bit and expand when baked), they are a delicious addition to any fall spread and our one of our favorite family traditions together. As soon as I make my way into the kitchen and start pulling out supplies, little feet pitter-patter their way in behind me as little hands make their way into the mix. It’s a fun tradition, filling our home with warmth as the oven bakes and I know my little one’s memory banks are being filled as well.
Simple Sugar Cookie Recipe
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
3. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto ungreased cookie sheets. OR roll out dough onto well floured surface with floured rolling pin and cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Remember, your shapes will expand slightly with a sugar cookie.
4. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.
5. Next, decorate!
For royal icing, which finishes into a shiny, glossy appearance as it sets, it’s easy to whip up:
- 1 pound Powdered Sugar
- 3 Pasteurized Egg Whites
- 1 teaspoon Fresh Lemon Juice
Instructions:
- Sift sugar into a bowl of an electric mixer. Add remaining ingredients. Using the paddle attachment, mix on low until sugar is incorporated. Increase speed to medium and beat for 5 minutes. Check for stiff peaks. If needed, increase speed to medium-high and continue beating icing, watching closely for stiff peaks.
- Once stiff peaks are formed, transfer the icing to bowls and cover with plastic wrap, pressing the wrap onto the icing to prevent crusting.
- At this point, the icing can be tinted with gel paste food coloring. The icing can also be thinned with water to fill in piped outlines.
There are so many options to create and decorate for a delicious fall inspired treat! I loved using the Sweet Sugarbelle products to create some fall treats, the range of cookie cutters and ideas is large, the coloring for the dough made some incredible colors happen easily and the fun seems limitless!
What is one of your favorite fall treats to make this time of the year?
