The holidays unfold around the table. It’s where we sit with family, entertain, where stories and shared and memories are made. And now it’s the season to make it extra special. Below are a few tips for your own holiday tablescape!
Bring the Outdoors In
Step outside your doors and see what you have! A snip of greenery, twigs, acorns, pinecones or berries can bring a seasonal touch to the table. If fresh herbs are available, small bouquets tied with string, laying over napkins or in a bud vase will add a touch of green to the table, and can even be used during the meal to flavor the food.
Mix and Match
Don’t be afraid to mix it up, especially if you have a large party. It’s okay to mix plates, cups, napkins and flatware. Mixing patterns, colors and textures throughout dinnerware and glassware creates a unique holiday table with that personal and memorable touch.
Add Texture
Layer linens and other textures for depth and luxury. This kind of goes along with the mix and match, but a truly inviting table utilizes a mix of pottery and glass, wood and linens, and of course, something from nature.
Let it Glow
Candlelight, especially during the holidays, is important. At the table, having some kind of flickering light, like votives or tapers, helps to set the mood. Just make certain to avoid scented candles at the table (save those for the powder room!). You can also utilize string lights to make your holiday table glow.
Sweet Touches for your Guests
Style your table with simple, soft linen or cotton napkins so that they don’t slide off your guest’s lap or leave lint. It’ll make it easier in the long run for you as well, since they’re also easy to wash. Have drinks and small bites at the table and ready so you can welcome you’re guests to the table, get them a drink and let them know they can feel at home. Keeping an array of containers for salts and peppers, herbs, lemon wedges and oils, like an oil and vinegar set, not only look great; it’s also a nice gesture so that guests can season their food beyond the standard salt and pepper.
