Jay sorting turquoise with Marty in Kingman Travel to Arizona and Brazil this Month with Jay King

Jay sorting turquoise with Marty in Kingman

If April showers bring May flowers, what do Mayflowers bring? …Pilgrims. I know this is an old joke, but it’s how my mind works at times. It makes me think of how much easier we have it now. A trip that now takes days for us, might have taken our forefathers months, or, in some cases, years to complete. Every time I travel to a new place, I think of how it used to be and what the people who traveled there before saw and experienced.

We had a fabulous April event and lots and lots of sellouts and great feedback on a lot of the new material and designs we had to offer. As usual I had a lot of fun, even though I was a little jet lagged at the time. I want to give a heart felt “thank you” to everyone for making it such a success.

The next big news is that we have four big events coming in May. I’ll be starting on the 20th spending time with you as we bring you material from Brazil.  I will be back on the 28th, 29th and 30th, and will have lots of new material and wonderful new designs. We will be releasing our new Today’s Special on the 28th.

We are also going to have the great honor of having Monte Nichols and Marty Colbaugh with us on the show. Monte has owned the Sleeping Beauty turquoise mine for over twenty some odd years. The Colbaugh family has had the Kingman turquoise mine since the early sixties. Monte and Marty are co-owners of the Kingman mine now. The Nichols and Colbaugh families go way back. Marty’s uncle and Monte were best friends growing up. Both families grew up and were raised in Globe, Arizona, where the Sleeping Beauty mine is located. Marty moved to Kingman in the early sixties when his grandfather took over the Kingman mine, and has been there ever since. The families remain close to this day.

Please mark your calendars and tune in.

Safe travels,

J

Hi Jay King… and Happy Anniversary! Love your jewelry and your stories. About a year ago my sister ordered a turquise ring with matching earrings with metal metrix in it from you. The ring and earrings are heavy, are square but sit at an angle like a diamond. We don’t know if this is Kingman turquoise or possibly sleeping beauty turquoise. Would you happen to know? I live in Show Low, AZ which is about a 2 hr. drive from Globe. I hope to hear from you with an answer. Best DMR

Hi Jay. Love your stones but isn’t it time you started thinking about design. Most of your jewlery is single strung and maybe sometimes multiple strung but the design is in my opinion introductory jewlery making. Your prices have continued to escalate in a recession but a single strand necklace or cuff bracelet that doesn’t demonstrate creativity in design is getting boring. We are being asked to pay more so why haven’t we been offered more sophiticated designs?

  • MoreBling4Me says:

    Hi Jay,

I have many of your pieces and love them all. Have you ever thought of or looked into creating a pendant to enhancer adapter? Pretty please! I have searched online and cannot seem to be able to find such a beast. I have many beaded necklaces in which an enhancer can be worn but not a pendant. Having such an adapter (maybe even an adapter with various stones) would vastly increase all my pendant and necklace mix and match options! So Jay, can you hook a girl up?!

  • FPRATT says:

My wife got me the men’s bold ring in October 2010. I have probably only worn it a dozen times or a little more. It saddened me to look down yesterday a see one of the small stones gone. I know you stand behind all your work. I only see an adress on customer service but no e-mail or nphone number. I guess I understand that, you’d never get any peace.Should I send it back to the address or would you prefer written corespondence first? Any news on when the men’s line will be released?

  • kingme says:

Hi Jay!!I have a problem necklace.I am having trouble connecting with anyone to help get it repaired. PLEASE HELP!!! I have a turquiose bead that turned white, chalky, and broke. It is hanging on the necklace in 2 pieces. Item # is 237854. At this point I am thinking of breaking it off and just wearing as is. Hsn has not been much help in this matter at all, So I am praying that this will get me some help. I never blogged before, but this is my second attemmpt at reaching you..Thanks

    • Jay King says:

Jay, Aside from having a deep passion for your career with Mine Finds and Jewelry Design, you also care so much about everybody, and you try your best to satisfy all of the requests made by your new and existing customers—which is very important too! You are a very compassionate and loving person. I can see this wonderful trait, and upbeat enthusiasm in you whenever you are on H.S.N. with your Jewelry Shows. I am looking forward to seeing you again on H.S.N. in July. Take care, Jay. (L.O.L.)

    • clarika says:

Hallo Jay, I just received the African Turquoise necklace that sold out on the last show in June. It’s beautiful. I was wondering if we would see more of it – like in a ring or earrings? Also if it was possible to give more info on where in South Africa it was mined – like the province or the mine’s name even. Keep up the good work.

      • Jay King says:

I’ve already placed another order for more of the rough. There isn’t large quantites of this material and I have to mine alot to just get a small amount of useable material. You seem like you know something about African turquoise. As you are aware most of it is not of useable quality for jewelry, so when I found this I was very happy. I’ve been asked by my mining friend not to give out to many details till they have staked their claims in spots close to their mine now. Best J

  • preciouswood says:

Hi Jay, I’m glad you explained yourself in your Blog to me today regarding the comments you made on your early Sat., May 28 Show. I am very sorry that I misinterpreted, or, misunderstood your comments about “frozen cookie dough”. I realize now that you were relating your jewelry-making to your Grandmother, who makes everything by hand from scratch. This is how you make your jewelry—each piece is made by hand from scratch using the “Old School” method. (To be continued)

  • Katieboo says:

Hi Jay!! Just found your blog although I have heard you refer to it many times. I am blessed to have several of your lovely designs and cherish them for their beauty AND the stories you tell about harvesting the materials. Your passion is evident each time you are on HSN, and I enjoy benefitting from your “adventures”. I am hoping for liquid silver with black onyx stones with or without a pendant if you are ever wanting ideas!! :)) I missed the one you offered earlier. Safe travels, my friend!!

    • Jay King says:

Thanks for taking the time to write. We will be offering the liquid silver necklace in many differant materials as a standard item. People love the look and have made simular requests. It will be a stand alone necklace with no pendant. If you don’t get one down the road let me know and I’ll get you takin care of. Best J

  • preciouswood says:

Jay, I told her about you, and where she can find your beautiful jewelry collection, and your Blog on H.S.N. She really appreciated getting this information. I am looking forward to seeing you again on H.S.N. in July. Take care, and be safe wherever you may be, Jay. (L.O.L.)

  • preciouswood says:

Hi Jay, Regarding the matter on your May 28 Show, I forgive you, Jay. I am over it. We are good now—friends forever—you and me! Please try to pace yourself, and not overdo it in your travels. Stay rested. There was a woman I met last Friday who was very impressed with your Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Butterfly Pendant that I was wearing. (To be continued)

  • kittygem1 says:

Jay, first I’d like to say I LOVE your jewelry. Please make some smaller earrings, I don’t always like big and bold next to my face. Also, I was looking at some rainbow calcilica pieces earlier this year and I’d like to know if this is a natural or man-made stone. I’ve read conflicting reports and I’m leaning towards thinking it’s man made but I’d like your opinion. Thanks.

    • Jay King says:

As far as Rainbow Cal-silica. There is a material that is from a deposit made at an old factory which they made pottery that is man made. I get mine from Mexico from a person Marty and I have known a long time. I haven’t been able to film the mine since its located in a remote area where a gringo and a movie camera wouldn’t go over very well. I have pictures and we had them cut a sample out with a chop saw and our geoligist confirms it would be impossible for it to be man made. Best J

  • Sandra906 says:

Jay–I have & love lots of your pieces. Enjoyed the shows with Monte & Marty, and I tried to call but couldn’t get through. I’m hoping that one of the three of you might know about a turquoise ring I inherited: a wedding present from my grandfather to grandmother in CA inscribed with the date Sept. 22, 1902. Her birthstone was turquoise & his was diamond. It’s a delicate ring, gorgeous pure blue turquoise cabachon surrounded by diamonds. Do you know from what mine the turquoise might be?

  • preciouswood says:

about your gifted artisans “making everything by hand and from scratch”, and that your “Grandmother always makes cookies from scratch” etc. What is wrong with baking cookies from frozen cookie dough bought from the store? Not everybody, like myself, has the time to bake from scratch, like your Grandmother, Jay. That’s why I was, and I am still a little upset with you. I hope that you appreciated my gifts a little bit. Please let me know your thoughts about my comments. Take care, Jay.

    • Jay King says:

Hi Carol tried to answer this but it wouldn’t post so one more time. How you went from cookies to jewelry I’m not clear. I’m refering to the fact we make our jewelry by hand in the old style fashion. I’m not making any referance to you, and if you thought I was then thats not correct. I care about everyone and only wish the best for everybody J

  • preciouswood says:

Hi Jay, Regarding my Blog, on May 28, and your response on June 3, I think you did forget about the gifts I had given you in Dec. 2010 when we, finally, first met. I had made Chocolate Chip Cookies for you, and gave you a nice pine cone from our tree. Do you remember? Then, I was upset when you had mentioned to the Hostess, Rachael, on your early Sat. morning, May 28, Show about “frozen cookie dough picked from the store not being so good”. Then you went into a Littany many times—(Next)

  • Dear Jay, I am looking forward to your next visit to HSN in July. I have many of your beautiful pieces and love them all! I have a necklace from the early 1980’s, which I believe is one of yours. Is there any way I could send you a few photos of it to verify? I would really like to know for certain. Thank you so very much for everything you do! Best Wishes Lettie

  • Jay, I’m absolutely in love with the length and style of the South African Cloudy Sandstorm heart necklace. The 22″ length is the best and the multiple hearts are perfect in size and shape. Would you please consider this exact style and length in different stones? I see that item is a customer pick so I’m thinking lots of women would want the same. Thanks so much!!

  • glammomma says:

Hi Jay, I wrote to you about this after your last show and re-included it in my comments from May 16th, so sorry if this sounds repetitious. I was still wondering if you could include earring backings to your pieces as I’ve had one break when it fell off my ear and worse than that, totally lost one and had to reorder another pair. If there had been a backing on both those pairs the outcome wouldn’t have been as disastrous. Please consider adding this feature(backings) for our mental health-lol

    • Jay King says:

I’ve done this in the past. Just so you know next time something breaks or you lose one earring please contact us and we will help you out. If you go to HSN customer service and enter Jay King it will tell you how to send me your personal info securely. Then write me with your request for ear backs and I’ll send you some Best J

  • pippa77 says:

Hi Jay, I wondered if you ever offered any jewelry made out of bloodstone? I’ve never seen any for sale among your offerings over the years. It was once the birthstone for March I believe, and in the middle ages they thought it contained the blood of Christ. I’m not sure where it is mined, but it is a pretty stone–dark green with flecks of red. Just wondered.

    • Jay King says:

I have a connection for bloodstone in Africa. The real deal is extremely exspensive and really hard to come by in any quantity. Most people don’t know it was the original birthstone for March so good call. They changed it partially because it was unavailable on the market. I’ll see what I can do on my next visit to Africa. Best J

  • COgems says:

Jay – first I have to say you are very entertaining in your presentations & I always learn alot when I watch you. I have several of your pieces that I really enjoy. My question is you mention you have several women in your office that offer input & quality control. I purchased the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Ring with Bronze Matrix on the TS great deal! Did any of your women mention it’s top heavy & turns on the finger? It’s a gorgeous ring, I want to keep, but it may be annoying :(

  • luvcats94 says:

Hi Jay, will you be making earrings and bracelet(big and bold of course) in the mosaic pink shell? I have a necklace I need a bracelet for and I have ordered two online and sent them back because they were gold not pink. so, I need your pink. To match my necklace I do prefer sets. (Makes my life easier LOL.) I am now waiting for the amber and turq waterfall necklace to come. Get many compliments on my jewelry from you. THANKS

  • Moni767 says:

    Hi Jay,

I purchased these beautiful turquoise round door knocker earrings and the wire came off the earring. The earring broke into many pieces. My question is how can I purchase one earring.

    Thank you,
    Monica

  • FourS4 says:

Hi again, Jay. Forgot to mention in previous post my third favorite pieces are the petrified wood beads and pendants you said were from my home state of WA. The fields of that material are amazing there, right? Have your vivid lapis, coral, and turq pieces, too, including Sleeping Beauty and green Mojave. A last item to mention is an olive green and peach stone necklace with matching earrings. The “beads” are cut into soft squares. Is that stone called chrisoprase? Distinctive!

  • FourS4 says:

Jay, glued to the screen for your shows this weekend. You are a true showman whether you intend to be or not! Loved your story about the woman on the plane who told you that you looked just like Jay King! We would have lots to talk about with your lovely jewelry and adventures! Own lots, but my favorites from you are the gallery turq and amber necklace (large round beads) and the rough amber one. Ordered your pink/ green opal pieces this weekend + TSV – can’t wait! Best to you. I’m a FAN!

  • lilred1 says:

  • javatuss says:

I HAVE PURCHASED MANY OF YOUR PIECES BUT I HAVE A QUESTION WHY DOES IT SAY IN THE DISCRIPTION”COUNTRY OF ORIGION CHINA????”I PURCHASED THE BEAUTIFUL SLEEPING BEAUTY RING AND IT SAYS COUNTRY OF ORIGIN CHINA???? THOUGHT IT WAS MADE HERE THE GOOD USA ALSO PLEASE MORE STAND ALONE PENDANTS PLEASE

    • Jay King says:

Good question. I’ll answer this the best and simplest way I can. I’m not aware of anyone who is making their jewelry in the USA. We all make it with componets from differant countries. To give you an idea my silver comes from the USA, my stones from all over the world. I have offices and warehouses all over the place. To say I make anything in one place would not be accurate. I stamp China in the metal if I did any part there. I make my designs in many places the USA also. Best J
