October’s Story: Love, Luster and Labradoresence

ascot diamond Oct 2011 300x225 Rarities with Carol Brodie: Love, Luster & LabradoriteTune in to Rarities on HSN

October 23rd noon to 2 pm ET
October 24th midnight- 2 am; noon-2 pm and 10 pm -midnight ET

In my hand is one of the most famous diamonds in history. It is the Arcot Diamond, one of 5 colorless diamonds presented to Queen Charlotte, the consort of King George III in 1777. They were given to the King by the Nawab of Arcot as a token of gratitude. Over the years the Arcot diamonds had several owners. In 1959 the Duke of Westminster sold the two most famous Arcot diamonds (set in the Westminster Tiara) to Harry Winston.

Mr. Winston paid £110,000 for the tiara at auction and immediately had the Arcots re-cut to bring out their brilliance, making the larger Arcot 30.99 carats and the smaller Arcot 18.85 carats. Each was set into a mounting and sold separately as rings. The brilliance of the Arcot Diamond only magnifies its storied past of gratitude, rarity, love and passion.

For me, fire, brilliance and luster are the most magical properties of gemstones. For example, when light strikes labradorite in a particular direction, it displays striking rainbow-colored reflections. Most typically, these metallic tints are violet, blue and green; but sometimes yellow, orange and red can be seen. This effect is so unique to labradorite that it is referred to as labradorescence.

According to legend, the Northern Lights were once trapped in the rocks along the coast of Labrador (where Labradorite gets its name). A wandering Eskimo warrior found them and freed most of the lights with a mighty blow of his spear. Some of the lights were still caught within the stone, however, and thus we have the beautiful mineral known as labradorite.

I worked closely with the cutters in India to create hand-faceted labradorite that would look as close to rough diamonds as possible. The result is strands of labradorite beads that resemble the most organic rough diamonds. It took a very long time to achieve the look that I wanted, but the result is as mesmerizing!!!

Just take a good look at these labradorite selections and you will find the northern lights sparkling from within. I hope that you will tune in at midnight on October 24th when I kick off my BRAND new Today’s Special, a labor of love and labradoresence. I promise you it is worth staying up for!!

With love and luster,

Carol

P.S. These are photos of my extremely talented artists in India selecting the labradorite and hand making every Rarity just for YOU!!!

Carol,The labradorite necklaces are insane!I wrote a review on 36″ and will do so on 72″ they are beautiful. Now my mom ordered one she loves mine so much.I’m so thankful that someone else requested the multi-gem stainglass earrings.I’m dying for them and my friends also want them. It’s so hard to find REAL gems in black rhod plating. So thank you if you can bring them back.Just ordered the pink amethyst studs cant wait to see them.

    Hi Carol,

Is there any way to get an old ring style? It was a 15.65ct Pink tourmaline with white sapphires mounted in 18K yellow gold.

    Thanks

  • val1590 says:

    Hi Carol -
Can you design more cigar band rings like item #114-390 in 18k gold with fire opals diamonds and peridot? I love organic mix of gemstones with diamonds and black rhodium mix, its divine. Sounds like trunk show piece. Thank you.

  • abdj says:

Hi Carol, I received my spinel/diamond 36 inch necklace and love it. I am hoping and wishing you bring back your diamond 2-tone beaded 16 1/2 necklace because i want to purchase it. I would like it in the black beads. Really waiting for it to come back. Thanx

  • NYCGIRL842 says:

Hi Carol,OMG I got your labradorite necklaces and LOVE them!!!I have so many of your pieces I cant even count!!!PLEASE,I second the person asking for the stainglass earrings to return they read my mind! I too missed out on them and saw someone wearing them and asked where they got them.Thank you for creating jewelry we are obsessed with!xoxo

  • KIMTHIB says:

Hi Carol–Hope you are feeling better! I ordered the TSV labradorite and loved it so much that I went back and ordered the 36″. These are winners–so lovely and elegant. I also want to commend you on your watches–I own both the evil eye and the rose gold versions and they are exquisite. When I had my jeweler size my rose one, he told he me absolutely LOVED the color–and he is a very high end jeweler. Thanks for your beautiful items!

  • val1590 says:

    Hi Carol-
Wow wee the YELLOW Sapphire bangle went FAST…
I wanted one too, shucks. Is there any possibility of waitlist for this item? Hope you are feeling better, its Winter in New York and my favorite time of year.

    • Carol Brodie says:

It is my favorite time of year too!!!!! It was crisp and cold today in CT and as delicious as a perfect red apple. The yellow sapphire bangle will reappear… just keep checking on-line. Many times orders get cancelled or customers buy two of an item and decide to only keep one. I am on my way to recovery… thank you so much for checking in and I will see you on Sunday, Nov. 19th for another insanely beautiful collection. xoxo

      • Omma says:

        Hi Carol,
I am also interested in the yellow sapphire bangle. I am only
interested in natural, unheated and untreated sapphires. Is your bangle made with these natural unh.unt. sapphires? Also,
I missed out on your labradorite TSV. Maybe this will come back again as a TSV. Thank you Carol for your rarities pieces.
I hope your health continues to improve.

  • aqualady says:

Carol, My order from the 24th just arrived. Every order I receive is more amazing. I look at other designers and even consider ordering, but nothing I’ve found matches your style and elegance. Thank you for your amazing pieces.

Carol I purchased the 36 inch labradorite necklace and wrapped it twice. It’s perfect. I would like to wear and never remove it.

Is it sturdy and durable enough to wear in the shower and to bed?

I also ordered the blue diamond swirl ring. Georgeous!!!!

    • Carol Brodie says:

Hi!!! I love the pieces that you ordered. How insane is the blue diamond ruffle ring? And I am sorry to break the bank, but wait until you see what is coming for November…. OMG!!

Honestly, I really do not suggest sleeping in the necklace. Because it is all hand wired, it is like crochet… beautiful and strong but not made like iron.

Also, most water contains minerals and chlorine that can be harmful to gems and precious metals. Hope this helps. xoxox

  • spence900 says:

Hi Carol,I purchased both labradorite necklaces and was very excited that you black rhodium plated them!I own the art deco champ ring, the onyx and champ bracelet and Catherine the great pcs.All of the Crown spring, the tassel necklaces etc.etc.etc!!!Since the first show I’ve been there.I am desperate for pave set multi-gem earrings in black rhodium plating but lightweight like the stainglass version,Please, I hate to beg and don’t want to purchase from anyone else but you. Will you make them?thanx

    • Carol Brodie says:

OK… so are you thinking about the pave set multi-gem earring in gold vermeil (re-done in black rhodium) or are you referring to the round one I did last year in black rhodium plated sterling silver)? Just let me know… anyone who has collected all of those Rarities deserves the perfect earring. Thanks so much for your support and for taking the time to ask for what you want. xox

      • spence900 says:

Hi,Thanks for responding,I’m interested in the black rhod multi-gem stainglass version you did last year.My friend has them and they are beautiful and lightweight. My other friends want them as well and I think they would def sell out!I loved the story that coincided with them. Can you bring them back? The sooner the better,Ha!I think that the new gold version in black rhod would be to heavy.Thank you for going the extra mile for your loyal customers.P.S. I love Barney’s but love your stuff more!!!

  • rockchic says:

Hi Carol–during the live shows you encourage us to write to you on Facebook. Maybe I am going to the wrong site, but at the Rarities site it does not have the option to “friend” you, so I cannot respond to anything you wrote.. Please let me know how to contact you on fb. Then you will know why I bought seven pieces last visit!
    Thank you!
    Karen

  • Bessamer says:

Carol, you’re said in the past that you don’t repeat your designs. But I wish you would reconsider making your enormous lavendar chalcedony ring. Please try to repeat things that sold out fast and that were so few in number to begin with. If you’re on tv nationwide there ought to be a larger number of things if you won’t be repeating them. At least a second chance would be nice on the scarce pieces. At any rate, I a big fan.

    • Carol Brodie says:

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me. The lavender large dome ring is SOLD out for good. The manufacturer who made that particular ring will not be able to re-make it. I can promise you that between November and December, there will be some other beautiful and bold pieces that will catch your eye and that you will fall madly in love with. Be patient… it has its virtues (especially when they sparkle and make us so insanely happy)! I hope to see you on 11/19 on HSN. xoxo

  • Carol, I was happy to see the evil eye enhancers return, however, with the new ones you are not using diamonds yet the price is only 20.00 lower than the ones with diamonds? I don’t get that but, please bring in more colors like maybe a sky blue, a london blue, and something for us hazel eyed girls!!

    • Carol Brodie says:

Hi there. The price of diamonds has gone up so much, that I would have had to almost double the price of the original eye if I were to bring it back in the same materials. Diamonds have skyrocketed… as have many of the precious metals and gemstones. I will definitely see what I can do with regard to your great suggestion… keep your eyes out. Thanks so much… and I love hazel eyes!!!

      xoxo

  • CTLady123 says:

    Hello Carol,
I brought the black onyx and champagne bracelet and it if beautiful. The shamballa style bracelet is a great feature, providing the ability to size accordingly. My question: what is the trick in keeping the bracelet in the position that you sized it to? I pull the ends to size the bracelet to my wrist but it becomes loose and I concern about the bracelet falling off my wrist. Thank you

  • Carol, I watched your first show of this visit, and was so
surprised to see my blog post on TV (re: what people are saying about Rarities) with the host reading it, and you saying “Thank You, California Girl!” It was really a nice surprise! I am sorry to hear you were in the hosptial. I hope it’s nothing serious, and that you get well soon!

    • Carol Brodie says:

I read every comment and I am so appreciative for all of the feedback. It is your comments that help me to keep making beautiful jewelry that you want. So, thank you again for posting reviews and comments on my blog and Facebook. I am on the mend… turned out to be a vocal chord issue. I hope to be pitch perfect for my next show on Nov. 19th. Stay well and I will see you then. xoxox

Looking good on HSN Mon night…feel better Carol!!!

  • lleno22 says:

    Hi Carol,
Just before my Dad passed away, he purchase the Rarites Ruby and Onyx solitaire ring #421311 from HSN. I cherish this ring as this was my Dad’s last gift to me. The ruby became detached from the onyx band. So I took it to a reputable jeweler here in Atlanta to have it repaired only to be told that the gold which ties the ruby to the band is “very fragile” and it would probably detach again. Is there anything you suggest or do to help me? Thank you! Lisa (customer 625703806)

  • abdj says:

Hi Carol, can you please bring back the diamond nugget/champagne necklace in the black beads. I am in the process of a delivery for the spinel one. I make it a point to look quite often online to look for it. The last time i looked it was in the gray, then it was gone from the site. I am waiting for it in the black.

    waiting, thanx

  • meli1234 says:

Hi Carol – I’m SOOO excited to see the new labradorite pieces and I can’t wait for the upcoming shows! I have at least 30 pieces and each new one I get is my favorite. I just saw the butterfly ring pop up on .com and I’m ordering it now! Please please please bring more shamballa bracelets. I love the matte onyx but would love some with different gem balls…maybe spinell or ruby or both. Please keep up the great work, you are an amazing woman and I appreciate all your hard work.
