Int’l Update!
Every year at this time the Jewelry Buyers make their way to Hong Kong and Thailand. Huge jewelry shows take place there at least twice a year. The photo below is Pamela, one of our brilliant Buyers, at the Royal Palace and temple in Bangkok.
While she was there she studied several couture trends including chandelier earrings, global influences like oxidized, Balinese style textures and new uses of brass and copper. On the other end, but still highly stylized, there were the organic looks with rough diamonds, rutilated quartz, cabochons and beads of rough precious stones. In the past they would have been exclusively reserved for faceting. You’ll love how you can peer into the stones just like a crystal ball and see all kinds of things. Have you ever looked at a cloud and thought you saw an animal shape or if you are like me, I swear there is a siloutte of a bunny rabbit on the moon. Look for it! I’ve pointed it out to friends before and they have agreed. It could have been just to change the topic now that I think about it though. When I look in cabochons or even stones under the microscope sometimes the characteristics of the stones look like Mother Nature’s drawing board. I have seen what looks like a dragon, a heart, a turtle! I’m not the only one seeing critters! Even at the world class designer’s at the show Pamela went to were interpreting animals in gems – not as clarity characteristics, but as pins, rings and necklaces. The list included; snakes, diamond fox pins, spiders, lady bugs baroque pearls (later made into butterflies with gold.) This reminds me…while I was in Tucson, I saw the most amazing pearl creation in the body of Pegasus with wings of 24k gold.
I hope your passport is up to date like our Buyer’s are – if not, no worries. We are bringing the world to you. Let’s go to Italy first! I just watched that movie about the woman who reinvents herself “under the Italian sun”? Do you remember it from 2003? The history and nature there is so lush. I want to introduce you to a very special guest who we are so proud to have at HSN: Meredith Borowski! She brings her Treasures D’Italia Line of gold. You may know her from her many years on TV with her gorgeous jewelry. She is one of the superstars who will be part of our special event at the end of March called Passport to Fine Jewelry. Here we are together modeling some of her creations. OMG we are so alike! I am happy they are putting us on air together, but I have already been warned by my best friend that Meredith and I will need to slow down and breathe during the show. We both tend to speak quickly when we are excited. And I am very excited about Meredith coming to HSN. Her new treasures are going to be wonderful additions to your collections. So if you don’t know her yet, I’m sure you will love her. She is a busy mom, learned the gold trade from her dad and travels to Italy 4 times a year to work with her designers. Love it! Love her!

As we move into April, just like the flowers start to bloom, our designers are also revealing their new collections in fine jewelry. Vera of Pearls by Veronica will be here with another amazing crochet Agate necklace and we will see the return of rose drusy. Rare jumbo coin pearls and jumbo pearls in all colors will be shown. They are so hard to acquire, but we have them! Speaking of color, we are launching colors of titanium with gemstones. They are so different and breathtaking. Justine Simmons is bringing a new watch on April 7th. I haven’t had a chance to work with her yet, so I am psyched. She is also bringing some very distinctive creations that are so “beyond”. Check her out on the 10th and 11th of April too.
Per Your Request!
Boy, oh boy, did we hear you loud and clear about the bowls made of Turquoise and Lapis from Jay King. I just talked to him 3 days ago and he is working on them. They will be limited editions. So as soon as you see them, don’t wait. He must have said that to me 6 times on the phone. I think he is worried he may never be able to do them again. He hates to disappoint you.
We will be doing another loose gem show this summer and it is going to be bigger and even better than the last one. We do have stones here at HSN.com if you need something before the show airs.
Pat, KY – the best way to make your Turquoise shine is to polish it. It does take polish well. When unpolished the luster is dull. You may need to take it to a bench jeweler for a professional polish wheel. I doubt a polishing cloth and elbow grease will give you the look you want.
Patti, NV – I will ask about the Tashmarine Garnet and get back to you.
Tammy, NY – good for you! I hope your design dreams come true. I do personally recommend the Gemological Institute of America for classes on jewelry making and the industry. Many of the classes can be done at home. They have a website.
Mike, VA – I love that you want more men’s jewelry. We don’t do a lot on TV, but our collections here at HSN.com are very cool. Have you searched our selections?
Deborah, AR and Jeanette, FL – I am working on getting your e-mails to Jay so you can have your situations resolved. Sorry it has taken so long.
I’m running late to get ready to go on-air, but will look forward to your comments and requests. Happy Spring (almost here!)
Rock on! Shivan

Shivan…I love watching you. Not only are you a knowledgeable gemologist but you are also just plain entertaining. I feel like I learn something every time I watch your show. Thanks! S
YOU DO A GREAT JOB AS A SHOW HOST. CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POLISHED GOLDTONE AND VERMEIL. I’VE NOTICED THAT A LOT OF THE JEWELRY NOW IS POLISHED GOLDTONE. ADRIENNE & SUZANNE DO THE GOLDTONE AND THEIR JEWELRY IS NOT INEXPENSIVE. SUZANNE USE TO DO A LOT OF VERMEIL BUT NOT NOW. I’V BEEN WITH HSN SINCE THE DAYS OF TOOTIE! A LONG TIME! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. I ADMIRE THE WORK TO DO. YOU ARE VERY KNOWLEDGABLE IN THE JEWELRY ARENA.
Shivan,I was wondering if you could tell me if item#406-645 Cesar’s butterfly necklace will be coming back. I missed the show because there is no email reminder for this designer. I would appreciate it if they would bring it back.Thank you. You do a great job.
Shivan, you’re a very pleasant and charming person. However, that does not mean that you make a good show host. I can’t believe that someone of your credentials and knowledge of jewelry would continually, show after show, ruin the integrity of the pieces you present by touching the stones all the time! This is so infuriating to watch. You seem to do it as if on purpose. We have no choice but to sit there and watch as you put your fingerprints all over every single piece, please be like Colleen
Shivan, thanks for giving us inside info. and your jewelry expertise! I love watching your shows.
Hi Shivan! It was nice to meet you at the talk show on Wednesday! I was your seatmate in lavender ;-) Anyway, I look forward to catching you on the air soon!
Cool updates! LOVE that smoky quartz butterfly pendant in you insider picks. Not sure if this will make it onto blog, but anyway, you rock too!
Shivan, I watched you and Jay today and enjoyed the show(but I always enjoy Jay). I talked the testimonial line, held for over 45 min and was then told no more calls even though you did talk to several customers after I hung up and I was upset. I have about 2 jewelry boxes full of Jay’s jewelry and ordered the lemon chrysoprase this morning. Please pass on to Jay I would love to see him make some jewelry with larimar and druzy. Also his new magnetic closure would be hot in different leather cord
Hi Shivan. I always watch Jay King’s jewelry shows when he is on. I have a question regarding the turquoise that he says is compressed. I was wondering what this term means and how the process is done. Thank you for your time.
Dear Shivan, I have a friend that just got back from a cruise and she bought several pieces of jewelry. I hadn’t heard of this color of stones and was just wondering if you had. She got a ring with a chamelion topaz-it looks like a Kunzite-very pale pinkish or lavender color, is there a chamelion topaz.
The other thing she bought was a millenium topaz, it’s an electric blue color. Have you ever heard of either one of these stones. I just wanted to make sure she wasn’t ripped off.
Thanks for you
Hi Shivan,
Would you please ask Adrienne’s buyer if you could re-stock item 363-414? It’s her double inside outside hoops in two sizes and both color metals. I bought your last pair in stock and love them better than any of my other inside outside hoops and would like to own all sizes and all colors. Thanks for your consideration and possible help!
Shivan I am always so happy when I turn on HSN and you are on! Maybe it’s because YOU seem so happy. But then of course you would be. You get to play with all that fabulous jewelry! I do wonder though – how do you keep your hands looking so beautiful? What’s your secret?
Shivan!! I finally created a new password, so here I am. I am one of your biggest fans, fyi! Love you and your enthusiasm and exquisite knowledge of gems and fine jewelry – one of my favorite subjects! Love you and love your show. You’re the best thing that ever happened to HSN. Oh, I can’t wait to see the Turquoise bowl. When will that air? xxxooobw
Shivan,
I’m looking for gold or chocolate colored pearls; ring, earrings, and necklace. Will you be showing anytime soon?
Thanks.
Jay’s jewelry is magnificient. However, he really needs to have his jewelry individually hand knotted. I banged my hand on the armrest when I was getting in my car. The turquiose bracelet I was wearing broke, and pieces went all over my car! Recently, I bought one of his necklaces, and the string broke, sending tiny pieces everywhere. He needs to put bullet backs on the earrings. Those tiny butterfly clasps are really inadequate for his substantial earrings. Thanks, Shivan. You are the best!
Shivan: Please consider bringing in some murano glass bead and sterling silver bracelets similar to the expensive Pandora european bracelets sold in high-end stores. Pandora bracelets and beads are too expensive, but if you could offer less expensive, quality imitations, I’m sure they would be a huge hit.
Absolutely THRILLED that Meredith is going to be on HSN. I have been a fan of hers for a few years now and each time I get another piece. Can’t wait to see what she brings this time. Luckily…my birthday is just days away!
We are very excited that Meredith and Treasures D’Italia will be coming to Hsn. We have been faithful fans of her gold collection every since she was on another network. We also love the energy and passion that she brings, she makes you feel it.She cares for her customers. We love her bracelet and necklace pieces, they are amazing, especially when she models them. She’s so passionate & in tune with her product..Look foward to viewing
Shivan, Thank you so much for responding to my problem, It just so happens a few came up on wait list and I was able to get one on exchange. Please tell Jay thank you and I really love it. Thank you Shivan again. You are a very special person indeed. Jay also. I couldnt ask for a better place to shop. I am so happy!
Hello Shivan
I love having your insiders scoop on all things gems and jewelry. I did not even know HSN sold unset stones! HMMM, a whole other avenue.. that inspires me!– except some of your jewelry guest are already so inspirational,I don’t know how I can top them. Keep up the good work, I’ll be watching to see the beauty of the gems and the beauty of Shivan!
Wow!! HSN will now have Meredith and her fantastic Treasures D’Italia gold jewery, what a coup!!! I love good jewelry and when I first found Meredith and her gold, I had to try it!
Her enthusiasm is great so is her expertise of the line. You can’t help but want to buy from her. At least half of my real gold jewelry comes from Meredith and I own a lot. I have already set my DVR for when she is on in case I am not home. I have been waiting for the line to be on your website.
We are so excited that Meredith is joining the HSN team! She brings excitement and expertise to each and every show! We can’t wait to see her new products!
I’M SO EXCITED that Meredith is joining HSN ! She brings so much Knowledge and Fun to buying beautiful gold! I have many pieces and can’t wait to see the latest collection! I’ll be watching!
You are going to love Meredith and the collection. I have some beautiful pieces that I have bought over the years and always get compliments on them. I am excited to see what she will bring to Passport to Fine Jewlry at the end of the month! I already have it booked on my calendar!
You are right, Shivan! There are 3 rabbits in the moon: 2 are jumping and one is reclining. There is a very old tradition (from Western Europe) of songs and stories about the rabbits in the moon.
I’m trying to picture these rough diamonds and precious gems as jewelry…usually you can’t really see into them without some polish; they all seem to have a film over them…I’m so curious about this trend.
