Debra Lee Brings Bake Huggers™ Edible Cupcake Liners to HSN

Submitted by Homemade Millionaire Blog on November 26, 2010 – 11:01 PM22 Comments

Debra Lee, 46, from New Jersey is the winner of the second Homemade Millionaire episode. With a background in Graphic Design, Debra enjoys nothing more than spending time with her husband, three daughters, and “furry daughter”, Pal. A true mom-inventor at heart, no wonder Debra’s invention, the edible cupcake liners she calls Bake Huggers, was a hit–not just with her own kids, but every kid on the block.

We chatted with Debra to find out what some of her most memorable Homemade Millionaire moments were, and why we should make her products a part of our lives.

Tell us about your “this is it” moment – the moment you knew that this product would make your dreams come true.

Our school was the first big ‘focus group” for the edible cupcake liners. As the kids ate the cupcakes liner and all, we realized there was no clean up needed! Even the fussy kids ate the entire cupcake. No peeling, no mess, and very happy children, indeed!

Most of our school knows about the edible liners. Now when I enter the building with a covered tray, I nearly get tackled, because the kids are hoping for Bake Huggers!

What are some ups and downs of the invention process? Any memorable or funny stories about testing your invention?

The positive side of the invention process is the hands-on experience and understanding the product inside and out; researching to find the right fit to accomplish what you have envisioned, and working hard to see your dream become a reality.

Testing to see if kids liked Bake Huggers was always entertaining. My daughters and their friends would take the liners before baking to snack on them. Rarely did I have the full batch of edible cupcake liners I had hoped for!

What is the one, absolute reason why people should make your product a part of their lives?

They are a little piece of happiness.

Now that you’re a Homemade Millionaire and HSN success story, what’s your next step, dream or goal?

I have many more ideas for Bake Huggers, the sky is the limit with designs like kits to make baking simple, kid crafts, etc. There are also other new ideas that are for things besides cupcakes and muffins! I love to create, and can’t wait to show the many branches of Bake Huggers.

Check back each week after the airing of Homemade Millionaire on TLC for another special Q&A with the next inspiring winner.

Should you patent your idea before you try to get on the? Also is it expensive? I have heard it is.
    Thank you
Oh should say this is a wonderful idea.

    • DebraLee235 says:

Thanks!Yes, you should protect your idea with a patent if possible.Be sure to ask successful people you trust & respect for legal connections.A referral is much better than searching on your own…too many sharks out there.

Trademarks & copyrights are another effective way to protect a new idea.

Sending yourself a sealed envelope with your invention written out, shows proof of your idea with a date.Just leave it sealed and file it somewhere safe.

      Always believe in yourself!

  • Hi HSN and Blog Managers, I have to congratulate HSN for teaming up with TLC and especially for bringing in the best coach in the world to help your inventors go from nowhere to Millionaire’s! Without Wendy Robbins, these inventors would not have had the ability to turn out excellent products—and she only worked with them for a few days. Imagine if HSN did a show with Wendy…the moments after you pick the winning inventor, your HSN audience goes behind the scenes with Wendy and the Inventors!

  • Francat says:

I am happy to say I ordered Bake Huggers before they sold out!On Homemade Millionaire Debra said the baker can choose recipes of their liking to put inside the edible liners.I normally hesitate to purchase product but with the holidays approaching, making nutritious breakfast treats inside of these festive liners sounds like fun!Decorating is not my thing but the Santa cupcake is so easy to make because of Debra’s design! My kids will be proud taking them to their class party & so will I!Thanks!

  • Other than kids being jazzed about this product. I still don’t get it. What problem is this product solving. I’m happy for the inventor but other than adding calories to the cup cake what really is the point? I find it kind of ironic this product was competing with a “diet” product. I hope that other lady finds a way to bring her product to fruition. I really think she did a WAY better job on the show than the cup cake lady. Probably a market for both woman.

    • queenie923 says:

Everyone loves CUPCAKE not everyone is on a diet, Loved the diet lady story but CUPCAKES who can compete with CUPCAKES…
The cupcake lady was very nervous not everyone can be great in front of camera’s but she came up with a AB FAB product that SOLD out already that has to say alot. I can even buy them and I want them so bad, HSN SOLD OUT….

  • BarbaraK409 says:

I just purchased my order of Bake Huggers and can’t wait to try them out at Christmas. I love the designs and think that the Santa heads and candy canes look great together. I think Debra Lee is an incredibly smart woman for coming up with a totally innovative product that the world has never seen before. I don’t think the price is bad considering that you get free shipping and handling that you know HSN factored into the price plus you get enough to make 48 cupcakes. And a big THANK YOU for NOT manufacturing it in China.

  • chiaantique says:

Are you kidding me??? $4.50 was the price point and now it’s 19.95-talk about a mark up!! And what’s up with the tacky Christmas designs??? I would have purchased if they were plain. Typical bait and switch! Come on HSN-have you seen the episodes of the show? Give us what was advertised. Last week we were shown an appliance center for electronic hair devices and she’s hawking a purse we never saw on the show-quite a leap!!! And now this, come on HSN get with the Program!

    • kellyericmom says:

I can understand your frustration but as someone “in the business” I try to keep in mind that there are always production problems that the consumer is not aware of. I think Bake Huggers is a phenomenal idea-wish I had thought of it! My kids can’t wait till we receive our liners and at this point, to keep them happy, I’d have paid more! So happy and congratulations to Debra Lee for realizing a dream when so many of us would have given up long ago!! Waiting for Marcy’s styling station-I NEED ONE

    • USAalltheway says:

Ladies – ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!! This is why Debra Lee is going to be a millionaire & you are not! These cupcake holders are ingenius. There are so many ways to use a product like this that it boggles my mind that some of you do not see their potential. The moment I saw this product I KNEW it would win & be a hit. There are many many ways that they can & will be used. There is nothing else on the market like them. They are excellent for entertaining, finger-foods, bake sales… LOVE THEM!!!♥

    • USAalltheway says:

If you PAY ATTENTION to the show – HSN is looking for an inventor that wants to develop ADDITONAL products beyond just the original submission! I am so excited for these ladies. Some of you just don’t get what products and sales are all about. These women have created unique items that will appeal to many people! LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
