Family and Functionality: Vern Yip Shares His Inspiration for New Home Line

Let me start this by conveying how thrilled I am to be launching the Vern Yip Home collection at HSN! I’ve been on design-oriented television now for almost twelve years (starting with Trading Spaces and now with HGTV Design Star and HGTV Urban Oasis) and have been amassing ideas for my line ever since I started my career as a professional designer almost fifteen years ago.
It is, obviously, a ton of work putting together a collection…but it is also so much fun! For the launch of my line, I pulled upon my personal experiences as a Dad living with two beautiful kids under the age of two and four huge dogs (washable and durable is key), traveling to 42 countries in five years, and of course solving the functional and aesthetic problems of the hundreds of families across this country who’ve been nice enough to allow me into their lives to transform some part of their home for the shows that I’ve been on. Of the many things that I’ve learned along the way, one of the most important is that home décor needs to be purposeful. If it comes into my home (and yours), it needs to be both functional and beautiful. One without the other just doesn’t work.
In pulling together all the different elements going into the Vern Yip Home line, I got to put into action many of the ideas that have been stewing in my head for years. For example, items are scaled to have a life beyond one purpose in one room. I like items that can grow with you and adapt as your life changes. Framed artwork (timeless subjects that will evoke an emotion!) will work singularly in a tough to finish spot in your foyer…or can work with other pieces to address a larger area over a sofa, queen size bed (two pieces side by side are scaled perfectly), or king size bed (three does the trick here).
One of my favorite items to work on has been bedding. It is such an easy and practical way to quickly transform one of the largest pieces of real estate in your house…your bed! For the launch, I designed a medallion based on the lotus flower, which has been a symbol of renewal for thousands of years. Lotus also happens to be the name of the first business my parents started when they gave up everything and moved to this country to give me access to education, healthcare, and the freedom that our country is renowned for. The lotus has always meant a lot to me…and now I get to share that with you! I look forward to hearing what you all think of the collection and hope that I can help you transform your home into the most beautiful (and functional) place you can imagine.

I recently saw a commercial for Uverse featuring Vern. I would like to
know where to buy the turquoise tufted sofa featured in the ad and how much it is. Thanks. I loved watching you ever since Trading Spaces and have used many of your ideas in my home.
I ordered one of Verns comforter sets. Loved the color but when I washed the sheets they came out so wrinkled, everything! was sooooooooooo wrinkled. I don’t like to iron so I gave all of it away. Too expensive to have THAT MANY WRINKLES!

Dear Vern.I’ve always loved you desings and you as a person too.I ordered your your bed collection,it was just the color I wanted.It was the same color as my bathtub and I wanted to bring that color into my bedroom.Well,it just so happened that I had company at the time and I put the set on my bed after washing only the sheets. I was so dissapointed when I found that the sheets came out so wrinkled and already had bumps on them.I couldn’t believe the quality with your name on them.

I have always loved to watch when you did a make over in someones house. and love what you are selling on HSN but why doesn’t anyone make Bedspreads anymore i really hate comforters .they are never big enough to fit the beds and a bedspread is just much better looking and i know you can make them with the prints of comforts. i have faith in you on that . I always loved watching Trading Spaces and your shows on HGTV. I love the clean lines and simiplicity of your rooms. I am so happy that you are now on HSN because I love HSN too! I am in the process of moving into a new home and purchased all new bedding (All Vern Yip Home Collecton) for all four bedrooms. I also purchased the throws and throw pillows for my family room. I just received your bedding set in the turquoise…it is a perfect color. I have been looking for just the right shade and design. I am tired of the same old square shape patterns and the color on color stripe or the plain duvets. This is very calming design and is perfect for my B/R in my condo in Florida. Just the right weight.
I was lucky to tune in at the right time.
Now for some wonderful print decorative pillows and the room would be complete. I am using orange accents.

Hi Vern. Welcome to HSN. I’ve been a fan forever. Love your designs.I received the lotus coverlet and shams today and think they’re beautiful. I purchased the linen/gray. I’m having a problem filling the queen size shams. My standard/queen pillows aren’t big enough to fill them so they’re just drooping. I tried squeezing a king size pillow in but it wouldn’t work. Are there fillers made just for shams other than for euro shams? I would love to see more of your accessory line the next time.
I love home decor and really looked forward to seeing your premier on HSN. Unfortunately I was disappointed that the host did not allow you to introduce your collection fully, I feel she interjected too much of her own opions and your story is what I wanted to hear. I wanted to know more about your inspiration for the collection as well as your ideas on how to use the items not only with each other but how to incorporate them into my existing decor.Please bring more of your story next time.
