December Finds

Submitted by Jay King on December 11, 2009 – 9:50 AM155 Comments

Well here they are again—the holidays once more!  I can’t believe how fast they’ve come around, and how much I have to be thankful for.

We’re now in full swing ramping up for 2010.  I’ve been making travel plans and setting up appointments with all our friends attending Quartzsite and the Tucson Gem Show.  For some of those miners and prospectors it’s the only chance we will get to see them for a whole year.  I just can’t wait to get started.

At this point we’re already finishing up on designs for April and May of 2010.  I have to tell you I’m so excited about what we have to offer in the New Year.

I feel like a little kid at times.  Some people who know me well, say I act like one at all times.  I just can’t wait to release this year’s December Today’s Special.  I feel it’s one of the greatest designs we have ever had the pleasure of offering.  I also know that you like to hear all about the “Mine Finds” coming up for December, so here they are:

Aztec Jasper:  This “find” is from the Southwest corner of Idaho.  This is a beautiful matrix stone.  When the miner looked at the design in the stone he couldn’t help but be reminded of art work, and he felt it looked a lot like Aztec artwork from Mexico—that is why he chose to name it “Aztec Jasper”.

Bauhinia: This “find” is from Vietnam.  This material was named for its color that resembles that of the Bauhinia flowers.  Many species of Bauhinia are planted in the tropics and are commonly known as orchid trees.

Californite Happy Camp:  This “find” is from California.  Californite was found when the miners where panning for gold in a stream.  The rough is all hand gathered and a lot of it was located by snorkeling in the stream to locate larger boulders.

Pilbara:  This “find” is from Australia.  Pilbara Picasso Jasper is a new material that is beautifully patterned.  It comes from only one location in Australia, therefore there is only a very limited quantity of the material available.

Porcelean Opalite:  This “find” is from Utah.  Porcelean Opalite comes to us from a family that loves to rock hunt together.  This material was mined in a valley with rolling hills.

Purple Orbicular Rhyolite:  This “find” is from Arizona.  This Rhyolite is very unique, when the rock was forming, there were gas bubbles and this is what helped to create the perfect circles that you see inside of the stone.

Queensland Petrified Wood:  This “Find” is from Queensland Australia.  Petrified woods are some of my favorite materials to work with.  Queensland was once a “conifer” tree that died and then was buried over many years and thru the help of minerals and sediments it became petrified.   This petrified wood was brought to us from a collector and is a very limited offering.

Please tune in December 26th, 27th and 28th to see our latest creations.

I want to send out a very heartfelt THANK YOU!!! to everyone who supported myself and our team this year.  As I always say, without our viewers we couldn’t do what we truly love to do.

I want to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season and New Year.

Safe travels,
J

 Answers to Questions:

Eileen, IN Yes, I’ve been to the Larimar mine. It only comes from that one location. The lore is it has something to with the lost city of Atlantis. This is the only location I’m aware of. They get very small quantities and it’s very expensive. J

Patti, NV I’m so glad you’re happy with the bowl. That always makes us even happier. The earliest you can expect the Lapis bowl is in February, but I can’t guarantee it. We’re looking for all kinds of new rough to work with. Thanks for your interest. J

Katie, AZ Hi glad you like the bowl. The answer is “yes”. We hand buff all these. The original master bowl was much more rustic. J

Cris, NY Thanks for your support. I can’t wait to show our December TS. It’s a great design and a ridiculous value.  Happy Holidays. J

Toni, TX I’m so happy you like it. We’re working on material for the lapis bowl. J

Elly, KS Thanks for your input. We have shot b-roll of them being made and we will share that on a future show. J

Lorn, MI Right now I don’t have anymore of the rough. I will be making a lot more rings in 2010. J

Linda, NY I’m glad you love it. That was a crazy price and great buy. We both share the love of turquoise. J

Mary, FL Thanks you so much for your input. J

SG, KY So many questions, so little time. We are working on the bowls not. I wish I could give you an answer. I will give you a heads up on the show or blog when I know. I’m on Dec. 26, 27 and 28. Wait till you see the TS. J

Tami, MI Thanks your support. I can’t say we will have those exact earrings again. I am designing with more tigers-eye for this upcoming year. J

Devo, CA Thanks for your comments. We are now doing stand alone pendants and enhancers. Unfortunately I can’t do it with everything. In almost every case because of packaging, freight, shipping and handling it would cause the prices to have to increase. J

Star, MN Thank you for your support. Happy Holidays. J

Deborah, CA Sorry that happened. I do stand behind everything I sell. If you want you can go to Customer Service keyword Jay King. Send us a letter with your information and we will take care of you. J

Margie, OR Thanks so much for your input we are working on some really cool garnet earrings and necklaces at this time. J

Ney, FL Thanks, I can’t believe you got three. Glad you like them. We’re working on the lapis now. J

Li, CA All I can tell you is this. I haven’t put water in mine, but I wash it out now and then. We have several in my house. J

Liz, TX Sounds like you’re married to a smart man. All I can say is you might want to check out the February TS. J

Joey, AR Thanks so much for letting me know of you’re new find. Without looking at it and having some rough material, it’s almost impossible to identify it. Sounds interesting. J

Donna, IL Thank you so much. We all with you a Happy Holiday. J

Pat, NC Thanks for your support. We’re working on the Lapis Bowls. I need more elves. J

E, CA Thanks we share the same feelings for stones from childhood. I’ll think about doing a star necklace. J

Maggie, IL Thanks for the support. Happy Birthday! Must be hard, since, Christmas and Birthday presents come almost at the same time. Happy Holidays! J

Susan, PA First of all Happy Birthday! I’m glad you loved the bowl. We’re working on new bowls now, but it takes time to gather this much material. I’ll keep you posted. Learning something new is always fun! J

Patti, NV Thanks, Happy Birthday! The lapis bowls will be next year. Hopefully in February. Right now I do not know. J
Thanks we share the same feelings for stones from childhood.

Linda, IN Happy Holidays to you. I can’t wait for the December show to release the TS. J

Carol, FL I want to wish you a Happy Holiday. Thanks for your support. Can’t wait to show you the December TS. J

Jay, I don’t know if you received/read my request for Sardonyx which the alternate gemstone for August. I love this organic looking stone. Would love to see you offer pieces with this stone. have purchased beads and will be making my own jewelry, but you offer such inovative designs! How about it? Thanks.

  • Anonymous says:

thank you for the most gorgeous necklace seen.

  • Linda, NY says:

Jay you did it again. I got the turquoise necklace with the opal inlay and am so happy to have it as an addition to my turquoise collection. I also got the yellow opal necklace and the casillica pendant to add to my casillica beads when I wear them. My husband also watches your shows with me and he always tells me not to buy turquoise from anyone else but you. He trusts you and loves to hear your stories about your finds as much as I do. I must own at least 60 of your pieces and love them all.

  • Anna, CO says:

Hi Jay! I LOVE your jewelry. I purchased your awesome and beautiful malachite jewelry set and a lot of your torquoise pieces. I also, purchased one of your beautiful turquoise bowls! Will you be bringing back your 2 bead tiger’s eye earrings? I missed out on getting a pair. Keep your beautiful art jewelry coming. Thanks! Anna

  • Sheila, NV says:

Jay- I just love your jewelry, and have quite a collection! I have a request. You made a necklace and earrings in sky stone and earth stone , in those beautiful little hand carved beads that looked like pumpkins. That’s not what you called them, but what they reminded me of. I purchased the green, but the sky blue was gone in a second and I missed it! I have the earrings and look fondly at them , hoping you will give the necklace another go. What do you say?

  • Caryl, NM says:

Hi! We spoke a few months ago about you having the hooks separately to attach to the lobster claw on some of your older pieces. Any news on that. I have been thinking that belts might be a great hit too. Maybe just the interchangable closure with a standard 1 or 2 inch leather belt. Could be for men and women. I am from Las Cruces and love to wear all your pieces. Just can’t stop buying. Love everything. I did recieve a necklace that was undone at the hook end.

  • Yvonne, CA says:

Hi Jay, I am wondering if you have left over gems can you make charms with the gems for a charm bracelet. But small in size, not big and bold. Because I have a 5 1/2 wrist.
    Thank you, Yvonne

  • sko90, IL says:

I love your work. But, I was wondering if you could sell more of the pendants and necklaces separately. It would make it more affordable for me.

  • Jay, I have many of your turquoise necklaces. Due to my skin problem my dermatologist told me to wipe down all jewelry with alcohol after wearing them. After I wiped down the turk with alcohol some of the stones had white in them. What can I do to make them look nice again?

  • Yonnie, CA says:

Happy New Year Jay! I agree with Janet from Utah. I would LOVE to have some clip earrings to go with my Jay King Pieces. Please if you can make bowls how about silver earrings in a clip on? You talk about your silversmiths being so talented please have them try clip earrings. Thanks

  • Susan, NC says:

Dear Jay, I also wanted to tell you that the corn roll Intarsia pieces that you call Gallery limited edition are my personal favorite. I really want the bowls but haven’t been able to get to the phone fast enough. Do you use any glue to hold the stones in the bracelet I purchased in January and the matching necklace? Turquoise Intarsia. I also bought the Special Value opal inlay in turquoise. Is there any glue in that? Thanks. I really apppreciate you. I’m the lapidary formally from NY now NC

  • Susan, NC says:

I’m a Lapidary. Sometimes, you only show Cherry Picked items from your collection to show on TV. Although I own 150+ of your pieces over the last 9 years, I was disappointed in the Yellow Opal compared to what you have had before. Do you sell rough stone? Thanks. I’ve not seen you in Tucson. God Bless. You have made my day more than once.

  • Janice, NM says:

Thanks to you, Stacie, and Jill, I was able to purchase the large blue Anhui cross and the 42 inch lapis necklace at the low sales price. Although I have only had these new pieces for 3 days, I have received tons of compliments. Thanks for all that you do to keep your prices low and a smile on my face! Happy New Year from snow covered Santa Fe.

  • Nancy P, TX says:

Nancy, TX. Hi Jay! I read a lot of the reviews on your beautiful jewelry pieces, and I wanted to suggest to the people who said that there wasn’t much color in their inlaid opal pieces, to take them out in the sun. When the sun is shining on them, the colors all pop out. I love that set and bought all of the pieces. They are beautiful inside, but really spectacular in the sun. A gorgeous set. Could you make some earrings to match the lilac quartz heart necklace, not too small? Thanks!

  • Tamara, CA says:

As most people here I have several of your pieces and the bowl. I was wondering if it can withstand any thing wet sitting in it? I know its a weird question, but I do have a reason to ask. Also, reading the other notes someone asked about white buffallo turquiose. Is there really such a thing or is it just howlite? I would love to see more natural howlite (not dyed) I think it looks like white turquoise. Anyway love you stuff, I can’t wait for the lapis bowl.

  • Kristie, CO says:

I recently purchased the Jay King Turquoise Cross Sterling Pendant in green. and I just love it. I think all your jewelry is beautiful. However I was wondering if you could at all design a white buffalo turquoise cross pendant with a 2 or 3 strand chip necklace and the cross in the same 3 inch size. I think if you made it a solid cross or the corn row as the green one I have would just be beautiful. I have several friends wanting that design. Let me know. Love your designs. Thanks

  • DM, MI says:

I purchased the turquoise w/fire opal inlay necklace and although it is beautiful there is a small chip where the hole was drilled for the wire. I was told through HSN it is on waitlist but I would not get the special of the day pricing or payment plan as I did when I ordered it. Is this something that could be sent back to you for repair? Are you going to make more earrings to match this piece? I tuned in too late to get them. I am on waitlist for the ring and would love the entire set.

  • md, MD says:

    Dear Jay,
I recently received the turquoise w/ fire opal inlay necklace and think it’s lovely.I’m confused however, re: turquoise process & if the piece is reconstituted. Please clarify the
differences between reconstituted, stabilized & compressed & how it applies to this piece. The
    reviews are confusing.
    Thanks

  • Donna, FL says:

Hi, Jay! I am loving all my mind finds from you, they are gorgeous! I enjoy learning about the different stones and their origin. Thanks for the fascinating info! I have your green (teal, sea foam color) oval shape turquoise with diamond shape cut out on either side of the band. Item 397-123 that recently sold out. I watched the video, but it didn’t tell the kind of turquoise or where it was mined. The stone has a little black veining and a few white specks. Happy trails to ya!

  • Carol, FL says:

Hi Jay. I just received both the Rainbow Calcilica Necklace and the Queensland
Petrified Wood Pendant and Beaded Necklace on Dec. 31, 2009. They are really
awesome, precious, and beautiful! I LOVE THEM! Would you be able to send me a
3×3x1 inch square piece of the Rainbow Calcilica rough (Dec. 28 T.S.) for a
paperweight? If there would be any cost involved, I would be glad to cover it—
please let me know. I thank God for Him having created you! Be safe, and take
    care, Jay.

  • Michelle, AZ says:

Hi Jay, I love your work! PLease bring back the large green turquoise pieces you had in 2009. They were spectacular and i really regret not getting them(the triangle on a double turq strand and the huge circular pendant on round beads.) LOVE my blue turq heart necklace and green turq pumpkin bead necklace. AND maybe think about larger center stone turq rings. Have a great time on your travels!

  • Joan, OH says:

Jay, I was thrilled to see the calsilica necklace, which I ordered immediately and received in the mail yesterday. I have the calsilica ring which I ordered on the today special 10 years ago. (Chiavonne was right.) I have been hoping for a matching piece all these years. Jay, I second the motion with the woman that asked for the stud earrings. I know there’s a market for them, because I just ordered a set packaged as 5 pairs in a box from a competitor. I know you can do better than those.

  • Cris, NY says:

Happy New Year Jay! Just received the TS necklace and cuff – you were right – it is so much more outstanding in person than it was on tv. The micro opal inlay work is amazing and in the light you can really see the fire in the opals. This is a work of art and wonderful for the price. I’m thrilled. I have a lot of your turquoise pieces and always think that I have it all but you keep coming up with new colors and designs. Don’t know how you do it but I and my credit card company thank you.
