How To Create an Applique Using Advanced Editing
Hi Sewing Friends,
It’s fall! Pumpkins, harvest, cool nights and football games…..it’s time to gear up our sewing for the Holidays. Whether you’re customizing a set of bath towels or monogramming a bath robe, this is the time of year when ornate surface embellishments take center stage! Machine embroidery has brought personalization to your fingertips and now with Advanced Editing, Singer ’s special embroidery software offers even more options for customization than you may know. The most difficult part is deciding exactly how you want your design to look because now the options are endless!
The first example shows exactly the stitch out as the AUTOPUNCH software interpreted the clip art. In the second example, I used ADVANCED EDITING to change the ‘fills’ on the tree trunk, leaves and birds. In the third example, I changed the embroidery into an applique, which uses fabric to fill in a larger size block and is one of the many options you’ll have with Singer’s Advanced Editing.
Here’s how you would convert to applique using advanced editing.
1) Click on a color block ( I chose the bird)
2) Click the Editing Icon (far left little man digging a ditch in the bottom toolbar)
3) Right click and select Embroidery Settings
4) Now select Stitch Types
5) Scroll down the menu bar and select Applique. Click on the box options you would like and then select APPLY. Be sure to Click the box that offers a second hold down line.
6) Click the Editing Icon to close the feature
7) Now go to View in the top menu bar and select 3-D view to see your results! You’re ready to stitch it out!
Once you transmit your design and begin to embroider the first block,
* The first outline will show you exactly where the applique will go.
* STOP the stitching and place your fabric over the area.
* Press start on the machine and watch while it stitches the second outline, attaching the fabric to the design.
* STOP the machine again and lift the presser foot.
* Carefully slide out the hoop and trim around the outline close to the stitching line (2mm)
* Slide the hoop back on and lower the presser foot.
* Resume sewing and your machine will make a satin stitch around the applique!

Sew your Dreams,

Hi,
New to this. blogging not sewing! But I am new to using a machine with an auto thread
cutter. I purchased the Futura XL550, I was embroidering away, started breaking thread
over and over, tried different things like adjust tension, next thing you know I have a thread
jam……can you see where this is going yet……so..I remove my foot plate to unjam the thread
and while pulling out the thread I also pull off something I had never seen before! something
Actually stuck to the bottom of my
foot plate! Teeny tiny little thing! I guess it had to do with my auto cutter
So now what do I do? I really was enjoying that too!
This is my second sewing/emb machine. I also have a Bernina180E that I have been using
for 11yrs.
Hope you can help.
I guess this must be a private party. Sorry.
Melindarhill,
I have a brother embroidery (small) and my needle was breaking so I did 3 things-I used a 90 or 100 needle, I changed the needle each time I start a new embroidery, and I put the speed control to the slowest. It worked for me. The needles punch so many times that they weaken and break if you use them for more than one embroidery, I know they make ones specifically for embroidery, but I just use the regular needles. I hope this helps you!
Hi Darlene and Ladies,
I am working with my new Futura 6700 and my needle keeps breaking during the embroidery process. It doesn’t seem to be a tension issue. Any suggestions? I’m not ready to pack it up and send it back just yet…I’m still keeping the faith that I can work around or solve whatever problem I’m having. But i broke 3 needles earlier today just trying to embellish some napkins for Christmas. =^(
Darlene, Hello!
You always have a good answer to the many questions, and I hadn’t thought about the question yet. So I just put them in the back of my head until I need the answers.
You are my Sewing Goddess!!!
Hi Darlene, I purchased the new singer 6700 and have never embroidered before iam getting it and have done some words and a design, but my big issue i think is finding the right stablizer for my projects and i have tried the sticky tear away and the med cut away and the hard cut away. im usually writing or using a design on t-shirt or knitt for shirts for adults and children and it seeams that the thicker the better but then you might gett puckering and im also noticing missing stiches.plse hlp
Hi Darlene,
Does the Singer Futura SEQS 6700 have advanced editing to change the fill stitch of a design like you did on the above example of the bird? Thanks so much,
Hi Darlene,
I would like to purchase an embroidery machine. Presently, I am considering the Singer Futura SEQS 6000 or 6700 from HSN. I am especially interested in designs I draw and can change the fill stitch and outline the designs. I like to embroider long cheery inspirational quotes. Which machine would you suggest? Thanks so much.
I have the SEQS-6000 .Trying to get my Christmas done. I keep while getting error..’machine locked up due to thread entangled with bobbin case or rotation interrupted forcibly. I did not touch machine in any way it was sewing. I have cleaned machine several times, changed needle . Tired to get Singer customer service to no avail. Why didn’t I buy a Brother machine instead?
Hi Darlene
I just received my new Futura SEQS6700(yeah;-) and threaded as the manual stated. Tried to sew a few variations of stitches and now an error message is stopping me from continuing saying my upper thread broke, yet that is not the case. I re threaded the machine multiple times, nothing, and checked the tension. I usually manage to thread a machine correctly. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
VoltzCraft
Hi enomisb,
Have you threaded the Swift Smart system before? It is a little different. Try this: 1) Presser foot lifter UP 2) FLOSS the metal tension plate at the top of the machine-it has to seat properly under the disc 3) Try Tightening the tension slightly 4) be sure the wire just above the needle is threaded 4) Try using a thread net or place the thread on the new spool pin in the back. May be a small piece of thread stuck in the sensor. Please call Singer customer help at 1-800-877-7391
Thank you so much for your response I will do just that and will call Singer customer help should I need further assistance. Sorry to have e-mailed this way.
Regards
Hi Darlene,
Thanking you for all the ideas and desi
Craftygal, Thank YOU for watching, shopping and stopping by HSN to say hi! Let us know what you make with your machine! Wishing you a very Happy Sewing experience!
Hi Darlene, Thank you for showing how to do applique with the Singer sewing/embroidery machine. I didn’t know you could do applique with it. I love the sewing/embroidery machine and want to learn all I can do with it. You make it so easy. I’m a little intimidated by it I have to say. Don’t want to do something wrong and break it. Please so more things that can be done. I also watch all your sewing shows on HSN. Keep up the good work.
ahooker, Thank you for taking the time to stop by this blog! I will continue to show Quartet software tips every month so I hope you’ll come back! You won’t break your machine! Singer built-in a lot of safety sensors so if something isn’t right, the machine will beep at you—preventing you from making an incorrect move, isn’t that great? So be bold and go forth with your creative endeavors and let the machine guide you!!!
Hi Darlene and HSN. Can you share here what embroidery format is for the FQ 4 ? I know it will handle many other formats, but what is the standard for this machine. I’ve ordered but have yet to receive. I’m busy downloading designs to use when it arrives. Thanks for all of your one on one personal attention. I wish all of corporate America had such wonderful people to interact with. Everyone should check out your page DarleneCahill dot you know. Such a wonderful site.
Thank you so much for shopping with us Ginsup and for taking the time to say hello!Your magic format is .XXX for all the Singer embroidery machines. Of course if you downloaded other formats, that’s OK as the machine will interpret them for you:)
When downloading designs from websites, floppy disk or CD, acquire them in the .XXX format. However, the Futura will recognize AND AUTOMATICALLY CONVERT the following :
FHE–CHE–XXX–PSW–PEC–PES–HUS–SHV–VIP–JEF–SEW–EXP–DST–PCS ENJOY!!!!
I purchased the new Singer Futuran Quartet and want to know if I can use any metalic threads on the embroidery designs. The SEQS6000 would not handle the Singer suggested metalic threads so I am going to try the new Singer. Singer customer support gave me metalic thread names they thought would work but none did. They all bound up at the last minute under the sole plate by the bobbin or shreddedd at the needle. I also purchase needels Singer recommended that might work. None did! thanks
HI Seniorsewer, Yes! I successfully used a variety of metallic threads on BOTH models. You have to loosen the tension slightly and select a design that isn’t too dense or the thread will shred. Select designs with wider satin stitches that progress…if it stitches in place (1 or 2mm) or has teeny tiny running stitches, the results will be poor and leave you frustrated. I used Robison Anton and Melrose and they both worked great! Also be sure to use embroidery bobbinfil:)
Hi Darlene, I just purchased the 6700 machine , Ido you know is there is a place around where I live to get some help with machine, I never used most of what is on machine, (I live in North Tonawanda New York).I have and applique that has a lot of colors in it for my business can you do a lot of colors, and do you have a flower foot for machine.
Thank you
Diane
Hi memo, You are in for a treat! You can embroider designs with dozens of colors… I have never found a limit yet and that includes some designs with 40+ colors! More good news! The Flower foot will work on this machine as it is a low shank. Did you know that you can watch videos of this machine in use on Singer’s U-tube site? http://futura-support.com/products/seqs-6700/videos
Copy/Paste the address to see videos of the 6700. Also check out my Top 14 Quartet tips posted today on my FB fanpage
Hi Darlene. Love to watch you on HSN and each and every technique you show us. I would like to know if I can use the photo stitch software with the new machine. Thanks.
Hi LouLou, You can use the Quartets 4-in-one version of the PhotoStitch if it’s a stand alone piece of software. If it’s in a bundle (several on one disc) then I would not recommend it since your 6700 already has a few of the titles installed automatically. Thank you for watching the Sewing segments on HSN! I hope you enjoy your new machine as much as I do!!!
Hi Darlene, I just purchased the newest Futura on November 7th! I have the FQ 4 Futura now. I love it. However, I think the new one will be even better! I watch your shows both on tv and also the HSN videos very often. Thank you for your presentations and sharing your knowledge of sewing! I can’t wait to get my new Futura! Have a great day!
Hi Leesha204,
Your excitement is jumping off the page! Thank you for your note:) I think you’ll really like the upgrades of the thread cutting, the extra spool pin, the extra software and the computerized stitch package as a sewing machine! Be sure to UNinstall the FQ4 software before installing the new SEQS6700. If both are on your computer, one may corrupt the other. ENJOY!
I am so happy that you informed me about using the computer for my new machine. I have a dedicated laptop that is on the FQ4 machine that is the Windows XP version. I will install the 6700 Futura to another laptop that is the Windows 7 version. I really appreciate this note from you. Incidently, I also have the Singer 5 thread serger. I picked it up on HSN a few months ago on their fantastic sale! I think the stitching is superior. the workbook really helps! Thanks again.
Does the new Singer SEQS6700 have eyelet stitch? Also, where can we get a glimpse of the pictures of the embroidery offered on the CD? And, what is the difference between the SEQS6000 and this SEQS6700? Thanks and God Bless!
MORE QUESTIONS, NOBODY ANSWERS!GUESS I BETTER FACEBOOK MY REQUESTS SO SOME PEOPLE WILL SEE. DOES THE SEQS6700 MACHINE HAVE THE SAME LOW SHANK FOOT, SO THE OTHER SINGER FEET WILL FIT? CAN WE USE THE FEET WE HAVE FROM THE HD5532 MACHINE? WILL IT SEW DENIM?
Hi nkr1—
Apologies for the late response! I don’t get a chance to see the questions during the Today’s Special Day as I’m setting up and tearing down displays all day long! I just came up for air after a 20 hour nap:)YES! Low shank and YES! you can interchange most feet. Will it sew denim? YES! I hope you’re able to get one! Happy Embroidering!
Sorry nkr1, there are no pictures available for the 1600 design CD. The 215 stitches included as a sewing machine do not include the eyelet stitch, you can see the chart on HSN.com when you click on the sewing machine. The differences are just above in this blog! Wishing you a great sewing day!
Thank You Sewthankful! Woopie I will give it a try today. ((Hugs))
Hi Darlene, A couple of months ago I bought the Singer Signature Computerized machine from HSN and you said you had a “cheat sheet” of the stitches that you would be happy to share, I thought by email. However, I have not been able to get contact info from either HSN or Singer. Perhaps you meant your blog?
Hi maj1109—Of course! Thank you for watching the sewing airings and shopping with us here at HSN! I’ll gladly send you the “cheat sheets” if you e-mail me at darlene@darlenecahill.com. Then I’ll have your e-mail address so I can reply with an attachment.Hope you’ve been enjoying your new Signature machine. It’s certainly one of the favorites! Sew Your Dreams!
I too, purchased this machine as a TS. I would love a copy of the cheat sheet of stitches you said you would be happy to share.
Gladly myshopping6135! I just need your e-mail address!
Hi Darlene
I have found really nice(non Auto Punch)applique, is there a way to fill with siitches using the Edit?
Thank you! Toni
tmcleland—YES!!! First you would have to “convert to block” before the editing will work on an already digitized embroidery design. Here’s how: Highlight design …when a wire frame appears around the design/go to the DESIGN key in the top menu bar and select CONVERT DESIGN TO BLOCK…..now wait for it… wait for it… watch as the blue bar scrolls along the bottom. When it’s complete you can click on any part of the design and edit the fill as usual. Singer makes so many things possible!!!
Hello all. Oh, Darlene, can you do anything to make November 7 get here any faster? I CAN’T WAIT!
Tensi

Hi!Thank your for sharing! I was wondering if it had the eyelet also? Thank you~
The SEQS6700 does not have the eyelet stitch but has 215 built-in stitch patterns as a computerized sewing machine!
HI Darlene,
this is great information indeed. I have been looking at the applique as well with my machine. Will be adding this to my Darlene section in my binder.

I have the Futura 200 but have been watching and waiting trying to decide which of the newer ones to buy just for the larger hooping.
