Birthstones – This Time It’s Personal!

Screen Shot 2012 03 04 at 5.19.22 PM Birthstones – This Time It’s Personal! There is a spirited conversation going on about birthstones on my Facebook page. Some of you are really into traditional meanings, but most of us just go with what we love. If you are wondering what your birthstone is, you can visit the Birthstone Guide on hsn.com.

The fact is, there are many different takes on birthstones. My first introduction to birthstones was from my Indian heritage. The link between gems, your birthday and you is ancient. The most interesting concept I’ve heard about birthstones is that in Poland during the 15th century, people were encouraged to collect all 12 gems and wear them during their associated month. I like this idea a lot! Permission granted to do your own thing and ignore old school rules, unless they speak to you.

Crystals and jewelry have always been important to me because of their beauty and energy. Personally, if I see a gem or jewelry treasure that I like, I will usually treat myself if I can fit it into my budget. Also, I am a collector. I used to collect all things “bunny” in college. Bunny rabbit mugs, stuffed animals, posters –you get the idea. I called it quits and announced to my friends and family that I was changing my ways when the bunny population grew out of control. Now, I collect jewelry and feel no need to limit myself, and indeed encourage gifts of this nature from my husband! I highly recommend that you call yourself a collector and see what kind of results you get!

Every family has its own traditions and meanings for birthstones. I hope you will celebrate that meaning and create family traditions that you can pass down from generation to generation because that spirit brings a sense of continuity and legacy.

Rock On!

Shivan
